Thank you to everyone who has shown their support for non-profit, independent media in Hong Kong during our 2016 Funding Drive.

As our extended campaign did not meet its HK$2m target, all donations will be automatically refunded – according to Fringebacker rules – unless backers opt-in and allow us to withdraw the sum they pledged.

At this critical juncture for press freedom in Hong Kong, we urge our backers to say “YES” so that we can unlock the HK$589,825 raised over the past two months. Please respond to the fringebacker.com email with your name. We will honor any donor rewards, as promised.

This sum will keep HKFP running long into 2016. Whilst we may not be able to upgrade our operations to the degree planned, we can continue to offer an English-language alternative in Hong Kong if we can access the funds pledged to us. Furthermore, we have likely found a sponsor for our digital marketing expert who can help put HKFP on the road to sustainability, and we are reconfiguring our workflow to allow our staff more time to pursue original stories.

Crowdfunding is, by far, the best way for media organisations to protect their independence. Over 1,000 people have contributed over HK$1m since we launched – a true groundswell of grassroots support. If you backed HKFP during November and December, please enable us to safeguard press freedom and put your donations to use, as intended.
