The delicacies offered at Xi Jinping’s state banquet in honour of US President Donald Trump’s visit to China have raised eyebrows online.
At Beijing’s prestigious Great Hall of the People on Thursday, the leaders of the two superpowers feasted on Kung Pao chicken, stewed beef steak in tomato sauce, and seafood chowder.
Other items on the menu included coconut flavoured chicken soup, garoupa fillets in hot chilli oil, and ice-cream.
A selection of Great Wall red and white wines from 2009 and 2011 respectively were also on offer.
The menu was posted on social media platform Weibo by attendee Lei Jun, chairperson of mobile phone company Xiaomi.
Commenter Yu Jianhao advised Lei: “Chairman, my mom can cook these dishes – next time just come over to my house.”
Fellow Weibo user Xinwu Biaoyang was equally unimpressed: “How are such plain dishes fit for a state banquet?”
