A video posted on Facebook on Friday sparked concerns over racism. The clip showed a woman covering her nose as a black woman sat next to her on the MTR. Some who shared the video on Facebook said that they had similar experiences.

According to the uploader, “when I sat next to her she immediately took out the tissue and covered her nose.”

The uploader later gave her seat to her mom, who in retaliation also took out a tissue to cover her nose. The woman did not stop covering her nose as the mother and daughter pair switched seats, according to the woman who shot the video.

“This is how we feel discrimination going on,” the uploader said at the end of the video.

“We’re all the same no matter what skin colour we have. And I am proud of my dark skin, so bye,” she said.

One comment on Facebook said that it was “disgusting” and another said: “Completely ridiculous behaviour, so sorry that happened to you.”

One said that the woman’s behaviour was “worse than drinking alcohol in front of [her child],” who was sitting next to her.

One who shared the post said “I had this experience too…. Train is so crowded during Sundays… Especially time of going home…”

“It is incredible how strong racial discrimination among the Hong Kong local community is. I myself have some friends that are victims of this stupidity, and I think it is a shame that, in a city this developed, acts like these are treated as normal,” said another.

As of 10:15 on Monday morning, the video had 781 shares on the social network and amassed over 155 likes, including 50 angry likes.
