The government has set Sunday February 28, 2016, as the date for the Legislative Council by-election in the New Territories East constituency, which was triggered by the resignation of former Civic Party lawmaker Ronny Tong Ka-wah.

The nomination period will be between January 5 and 18 of 2016. The date was announced through the government gazette today.

The winning candidate in the by-election would enjoy a term of around five months, as this term of LegCo is set to end in July 2016.

One of the rumoured candidates to run in the by-election is Civic Party member Alvin Yeung Ngok-kiu, who was the number two candidate after Ronny Tong in his party’s list running in New Territories East constituency in the last LegCo election in 2012.

Ronny Tong said after his resignation that Yeung would be an “appropriate” candidate.
