Vancouver-born Garrett Riffal shoots with a Leica m3 with a 28mm elmarit lens.
Though his shots have an old school feel, they were all shot within the last year: “I shoot on film so it does give it an older look but I also try to shoot in parts of Hong Kong that have more character adding to the vintage feeling of the photos. The film I’m shooting with is Kodak ultramax 400,” he told HKFP.
“When on the streets I’m looking for interesting people or scenes of people interacting with each other. Often I’ll look for people that when you see them you wonder about what that person’s back story is or what they are up to. This sense of mystery can lead to a great photograph.”
Riffal says that the city is one of the best in the world for street photography: “There are always people around doing various things. Add that to the fact that the city is always changing and you have a great place to explore and photograph.”
His next project will contrast Hong Kong’s close relationship with Vancouver.
