The outgoing president of the Legislative Council Jasper Tsang has said that there is “no way out” for Hong Kong independence, urging youth to protect One Country, Two Systems instead.
“I have also said openly that I hope everyone who insists on promoting Hong Kong independence will understand that there is absolutely no way out for it. Especially our youth – I hope they understand that only if we protect One Country, Two Systems and implement it successfully will it bring the largest benefit to Hong Kong society and our younger generation,” he said.
He also said that “the Registration and Electoral Office does not allow Legislative Council election activities to become a platform for promoting Hong Kong independence. I think this decision is necessary.”
Several pro-independence candidates were disqualified from running in the legislative council elections this year.
Tsang said that he is currently most concerned about the Legislative Council elections in September and that he hopes there can be people who are more suitable than him running for the Chief Executive election in 2017.
Tsang previously said that if there were no suitable candidates he may consider running in the Chief Executive elections, as he “truly want[s] to see genuine competition.” He said that a better candidate should at least understand economic and financial affairs. On the same day, John Tsang Chun-wah also said that he may considering running if he “can contribute to Hong Kong.”
