Leaked HKU Council tapes reappear on local porn website

The two leaked recordings of a governing Council meeting of the University of Hong Kong (HKU) have been discovered by netizens on ThisAV, a local porn website. Commercial Radio, the local radio station which originally broadcast the recordings, removed the clips from their own site after HKU was granted an interim injunction.

The two recordings were speeches by Council members Arthur Li Kwok-cheung and Leonie Ki Man-fung made during a controversial session on September 29, in which the governing body rejected the appointment of liberal law scholar Johannes Chan Man-mun as pro-vice-chancellor of the university.

However, a HKU law scholar discovered that there was a public domain exception in the injunction.

Therefore, other media organisations which have not received the legal documents can continue to broadcast the two recordings already in the public domain. Local newspaper Apple Daily subsequently uploaded the two recordings once again.

The recordings uploaded to ThisAV were the clips re-uploaded by Apple Daily. The two clips both received more than 13,000 clicks as of Wednesday morning.

ThisAV has been involved in social issues on several occasions.

During the anti-national education curriculum protest in 2012, the site voluntarily shut down for a day as the site’s owner posted a message urging users to spend some time to learn about, and support, student group Scholarism’s hunger strike.

When former Ming Pao editor Kevin Lau was attacked in February 2012, the site included a blue ribbon which represented press freedom at the time.

The site turned its logo to grey and added a yellow ribbon when the pro-democracy Occupy protest started in September last year, in support of the protest.
