The old Wan Chai (East) Star Ferry Pier was built in 1968, operating two routes to Tsim Sha Tsui and Hung Hom. It was one of the busiest ferry routes before the Cross Harbour Tunnel opened. After the tunnel began operations in 1972, the number of passengers dropped every day and, in 2011, the Hung Hom route was terminated.
The old Wan Chai pier was demolished altogether after the last ferry departed on 31 August 2014, as the government decided to reclaim the coastline as part of the Wan Chai development project.
In March 2015, the government discovered sunken shipwreck that likely belonged to the Royal Navy troopship HMS Tamar near the old Wan Chai pier.
